Dearest members and blues lovers,
It is with sadness that I am reporting the closing of the North Texas Blues Society on March 3, 2009...our fifth anniversary.
The main reasons are lack of participation by members and the blues fans in the area in general and major funding problems. The final financial blow came in September 2008 for our yearly fund raising blues festival, The Blind Lemon Blues Festival...the attendance was abysmal. If you will remember back that was the day that Hurricane Ike came to town...except it really didn't, the weather had cleared that night by 7:30 pm, but the damage was done. Hence our yearly fund raiser was a huge fund loser.
I do want to thank the workers and few folks that braved a bit of rain and came out to hear some awesome Blues that night. THANK YOU!!!
Well in five years the Society accomplished many positive blues endevours: almost 150 jams, a Blues Crawl, three Holiday/Christmas Parties and two Blind Lemon Blues Festivals. We provided volunteers for several other worthy blues related events in the Metroplex, tons of promotion for local and touring bands and venues too. And sending 5 local bands and solo/duo artists to the Blues Foundations' International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee over the past five years! (Huge applause here)
In closing, I encourage all our former members and email list friends (and anyone else reading this) to get out there and hear some live blues...at your favorite clubs/restaurants, at the new clubs. Please support the local Blues Festivals, and our local Blues radio programming (Texas Blues Radio) on KNON 89.3 FM and our very own regional Blues publication: Southwest Blues Magazine.
Lastly, please support the Blues Foundation by becoming a member. This awesome group of people literally keeps the blues alive and well for our generation and the generations to come.
Peace, love and SEE YOU AT THE SHOW!
